The context.

Mockat's exam-preparation product needed a rebuild covering lessons, tests, payments and analytics. Students' learning journeys had to keep working throughout the migration.

A first build at its limit.

The existing product needed a rebuild across its pages and APIs. The work included removing dead code and improving mobile performance while the learning and payment journeys stayed live.

  • Rebuilding a live consumer product without taking it down
  • Migrating hundreds of pages and endpoints in production
  • Mobile performance on the key student routes
  • Keeping payments and mock tests running throughout

Migrated while live.

Pages and API endpoints moved to the new stack in stages, so students kept using the product throughout. About 15,000 lines of dead code were removed on the way, and the key routes were tuned for mobile.

The system in three steps.

Plans and checkout

Subscription plans, add-ons and checkout moved to the new stack with the learning journeys, so students could keep buying and renewing during the migration.

What the platform does.

  • Mock tests

Full-length mocks and daily quizzes, with performance analytics.

  • Live classes and video

Lessons and classes sit alongside daily practice.

  • Payments and plans

Subscription plans and checkout were rebuilt with the rest of the product.

  • Leaderboards

Leaderboards and study streaks show students their progress.

How it rolled out.

  1. Inventory

Identify the learning, payment and reporting journeys to migrate.

  2. Migration

Move pages and API endpoints while the product stays in production.

  3. Performance

Measure mobile performance with Lighthouse on the key routes.

What changed.

More than 375 pages and 450 API endpoints were migrated, and Lighthouse mobile scores rose by 22 points on the key routes. Figures are from the project collateral.

Decisions behind the work.

Pages and endpoints moved while the product stayed in production.

Payments moved with the learning journeys, not after them.

Lighthouse on the key routes gave a measurable mobile target.
